Jet Lag is A Beast – But the Fun Continues

Someone's Jet lag just won't stop!

Someone’s Jet lag just won’t stop!

It’s been an exhausting week. With 2 to 3 hours of sleep here and there, daily naps, and some sleep assistance, I’m still not over the jet lag and Jaden isn’t either. However, we’ve pressed through in order for him to see and do things and today was the first day he didn’t complain about going somewhere. His not complaining could have been delirium though because he stayed up all night…and all day.

We spent the afternoon at the Kempinski Marsa Malaz here in Doha at the Pearl. We hung out at the beach/pool. There was only one other lady there for most of the time so it was peaceful and relaxing. Today was good because it was only 97 degrees. A June day in Doha below triple digits…I’ll take it! I pulled out the $5 selfie stick I got in CA and put it to good use. I kinda feel like a dork using it though. I probably shouldn’t have asked Jaden to take pictures with it while in the pool because my iPhone had 3 little dips in the pool. Thankfully it has dried out and it’s working for now. He’s not the most adventurous type but did ask to jet ski and kayak today. Unfortunately the water sports guy had already left for the day so we didn’t get to do any of those things. We will certainly go back next week and I hope he’s still feeling adventurous.

After our relaxing time on the beach we headed inside for our first Iftar. Iftar is a meal served at the end of the day during Ramadan to break the day’s fast. Iftars are a big deal at the hotels here in Doha so we thought we’d partake. We went to the one in the “tent” which was a big ball room set up like a tent. There were easily 400 people there. It was a buffet similar to if not better than many of the traditional Friday brunches in the city. They had everything from lamb to sushi to cheeses and a variety of salads. Jaden stuck to some basics because I think I traumatized him at the Indian restaurant the other day. He’s been a little less experimental with the food since he was introduced to Indian cuisine. He didn’t care for the spices. Me on the other hand, I dived right in! I had 3 different preparations of lamb and I still think I like lamb shank the best. The sushi was very good, surprisingly. They serve a juice that’s infused with rose water. I’ve never drank rose water and this particular drink seemed extremely floral. I couldn’t decide whether or not I liked it. It aroused taste buds that I didn’t know I had. Thinking about it now makes me want to drink more…but again, I don’t know if I really like it. Odd.

The rest of the week was spent getting out to the malls and showing him more of the local sites. He’s been to Lagoona Mall, City Center, and the ultimate Villaggio Mall. He was excited to see some recognizable eateries but I had to warn him that they usually taste a little different than they do back home. He keeps asking me what is it about the bacon that makes it taste so different. Lol, I wish I knew. At least the taste doesn’t offend him and he likes it. We’ve bought him a few clothing items too. As I mentioned on FB the other day, I’m not sure how I feel about shopping with a teenage boy. It was painful. I miss the days I would dress him up like a GQ model and he didn’t have an opinion! Between him and the sales guy I felt beat up. But in the end, the size jeans I told them he needed is the size jeans he needed and even though I like the more distressed look, he chose an acceptable pair of non distressed jeans. I bought him a pair of casual pants to wear to dinner and he actually likes them! And he now has a pair of casual shoes…not sneakers. I’m happy with that!

Lastly, I have to say that it’s only been a couple of weeks but I’m missing my jazz spot. I’ve met some great people at @JALCDoha and one great  person I met is @AkuaAllrich who happens to have an album that was just released. Not only does she have an amazing voice, she is super cool and has such a sweet spirit. I fell in love with the song Take My Time while she was here in Doha and now I finally have it! I kinda harassed her about that song while she was here lol. Don’t sing a song and then I can’t get it anywhere! But I’m glad I have it now! She has two other albums that I’ve added to my jazz playlist. I haven’t told her this but I’ve also fallen in love with the tune Sweet Dreams Man on her A Piece of Mine album. Akua Allrich – remember the name! Take a listen, download it, you’ll enjoy it.

I’m still not over the jet lag. It’s 2:00am and I have a flight to catch in a few hours. I may attempt sleep again…or maybe not. *sigh*

Living life…and it’s really good with the kid here 🙂
