I’ve had a fine time while here in the Pacific NW. As I crossed the I-5 Bridge this morning, I watched as the clouds settled around Mount Hood. It was a breath-taking sight as always. This is such a beautiful part of the country and being here just reminded me of why I fell in love with the Pacific NW. Being surrounded by the luscious greenery and variety of terrain makes me appreciate being here.
Spending time with Jaden has been a lot of fun. While I still had to parent, especially on the topic of school, we had a great time together. He’s matured tremendously in the last 6 month, yet I’m still reminded that he’s only thirteen during some of our interactions. What makes me smile the most is that he and I share a love for music. Letting him deejay in the car is fascinating! His play list includes: EW&F, Michael Jackson (when he played Dirty Diana, I almost had to pull over! That’s my jam!), Joe, Justin Timberlake, Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton, Mali Music, Deitrick Haddon, Kierra Sheard, D’Angelo, the Fugees…I could go on. I just know we rocked out whether we were in the car, at the hotel, or at home. We’ve had a great time and I’m looking forward to him coming to Doha.
I had an opportunity to spend time with friends. It was great catching up and filling them in on how things are in my life and hearing what amazing things have gone on in their lives. So much can happen in six months! I even had an opportunity to spend time with the OR AWHONN crew and enjoy a Kimpton Hotel. I must give a shout out to #monacopdx @KimptonPDX who made Jaden’s 13th birthday a special one. Nicole and LaRhonda exceeded our expectations and Chris & Steven in valet met us with the warmth that I’ve come to expect from the Kimpton family. Every little encounter makes an impression so thank you for making it positive. I was very excited to see Matt & Danny back at Red Star Tavern. That was the icing on the cake for me! They are the best!
It’s been a whirlwind of a trip from doctors’ appointments for myself and Jaden, to getting my car serviced – twice! I’ve been running around quite a bit. I’ve managed to hit up some key dining places to satisfy my foodie love. If you haven’t heard, Portland was just named #5 of 40 of the top foodie cities in the country. I still need to make it to @KoiFusionPDX (may hit them up at the airport) and Podnah’s Pit BBQ!
I came to Vancouver with a small carry on. I’m going back to Doha with 2 rather large suitcases. I had no idea that I’d need as much stuff going back. From shoes to winter pants to Kind bars and an Apple TV, I think I have exactly what I need to be comfortable when I go back. It’s been fun collecting items that I need to take back. Here are a few must haves that are going back with me:
- Dryel – the laundry & dry cleaning services in Doha aren’t what I’m used to
- Fabric shaver – b/c there’s nothing attractive about lint balls on your clothes
- Lint roller – can you get the laundry theme here?
- Kind bars – I love them and I can’t get them in Doha
- Compression socks – they are super hard to come by in Doha and I need them for the long flight
- Wigs – nothing like having some “rescue hair” available in a pinch
- Hair – jumbo braids are like $15 in Doha, $2 here – anyone coming to visit please bring a couple bags of #2 (:
- Mary Kay – Yeah, not getting that in Doha
- Wine corks – I think my bottle of wine should last longer that it takes to drink 2 glasses
Okay, I could go on and on! You get the picture! I’ve enjoyed my stay in the US, now I’m ready to go home. So I’m heading back to Doha. 36 hours and counting….
